Retail Therapy

I was out of the office by 4.45pm. It was a long day for me and needed something to excite me. I decided to go shopping. I went to the downtown shops where clothes were a bit cheap. The massive pile of clothes shocked me. It also hit me hard of how the fashion had changed. I was so used to wearing official clothes during the week and shorts on the weekends that I forgot to update myself on the changing market trends.

I found some really good jeggings (apparently these were a combination of leggings and jeans). When I tried them on, it was so comfortable and light enough for me to walk comfortably in them. The prints on some of them were so beautiful! I bought three of them. One in black, the other in was in tribal prints and the other was blue with white stripes near the waist. I also managed to get a good deal on the sheer blouses.

It was dark already so I went back home. Fred was in the house watching the television. I sat on the couch and checked on what he was watching. It was the show “1000 Ways to Die.” I laughed out loud.

He looked around and asked. “What’s so funny?”

“You hate this programme. What makes it special today?”

“Nothing…just bored.” He replied and switched channels to CNN where they were reporting on the Syria.

“Let me go cook.” I said while walking towards the kitchen.

“There is some food in the microwave.” He shouted.

I was surprised. “You cooked?”

“Kind of. I got home a bit early. Thought you would do so also at least we talk a bit.”

“Well, I’m here now. Let me freshen up. Ill be back in a few.”

I went to the bedroom where I placed my bag on the bed and proceeded to place my new clothes on the closet. I jumped into the shower. The warm water was so inviting. I stood under the shower for a few minutes before lathering myself up. I came out, wrapped a robe and went to the kitchen. I opened up the microwave and saw noodles and meat stew. So this is what he had prepared? I heated it up then went to where Fred was.

He was watching CSI now. I started eating my dish while watching but he switched off the telly.

“So, can we talk?” he asked.

“Yea, no problem.” I replied.

“Once again, I wanted to apologize for my behavior last night. I didn’t mean to hurt you although it was a bit stupid of me.”

I didn’t reply mostly because I had food in my mouth.

“It won’t happen again.”

“Its okay…it’s all good.” I replied.

“Really?” He asked again as if not sure.

“I have forgiven you.”

“Thank you, thank you!” he shouted clapping his hands. “I promise I won’t do it again.”

“You better not.” I said. I guess the retail therapy really helped me calm down.

Back to Work

The Alarm sounded at exactly 5.15am.

I turned and hit the snooze button. After five minutes, it rang again. I put it off and woke up. I went to the bathroom and had a shower before coming back to dress up. Fred was still in bed. I looked at the table clock and saw it was already 5.43am. He was going to be late. I tagged him forcing him to wake up.

“You are going to be late.” I said while applying some lotion on my legs.

“”Mmmhh…”

“You are going to be late!” I shouted at him and left the room to the kitchen where I started preparing breakfast. I heated the milk which I put in the flask, toasted some slices of bread then prepared some fruits. I then sat on the couch and started having my breakfast.

After a few minutes, Fred came and joined me. We ate in silence. We then brushed our teeth and left the house. I drove us to work. Today he was the passenger. A very silent one!

At my office, I started doing my work and trying to finish up on some deadlines I had.
Mrs. Wright was in the office too but she was having a video link with some clients abroad. At around ten, Fred popped into my office, closed the door and sat down on the left chair facing me.

“I’m sorry Kate.” He started while raising his right arm to his head. “I didn’t mean to come home that late.”

I looked at him and continued typing some data on the computer.

“Kate, can’t you see I am making an effort here? Please stop with the computer!” He shouted.

I didn’t say anything. I just looked at him.

“After the game Mike and I went for some drinks. I didn’t mean to come that late at home. I am so sorry.”

“Okay” I said and continued to type.

Suddenly, he grabbed my left wrist.

“Kate, really? Is that all you are going to say?”

“Fred you hurting my wrist!” I said. “And besides, why are you bringing our personal issues into the office?”

“I can’t work well knowing that you are angry with me.” He said releasing my hand. “You need to say something to me even if it’s insulting me.”

“I can’t deal with this now.” I snapped and walked out of the office towards the washroom.

He followed.

I quicken my steps and locked myself into one of the cubicles. I didn’t hear him. He must have gone to the Gents. Phew! Dealing with personal issues in the office was hard. How are people going to react when they found out that Fred and I are having issues? Nkt!

I slowly opened the door and walked back to the office. He was not there. I sat down and started working on the file I was doing. Work must be done whether I was mad or happy.

At The Game..

I went back home and started preparing dinner. I was craving some fried foods so I decided to make French fries and chicken for dinner. I didn’t care about the health concerns today. All I wanted to do was eat!

When I returned back home, I didn’t find Fred. I think he must have stepped out for a few minutes. I waited for him while watching CSI: NY so that we could all have dinner together. It was around seven.

I think I got so engrossed on watching that when I looked at my phone’s clock, I got shocked. It was ten fifteen! I got worried since Fred had not come in yet. I dialed his number and tried to call him.

The call didn’t go through the first time so I tried again. He picked up.

“Kate?” he shouted trying to be heard.

“Baby, where are you? I have been waiting.”

“Kate?......Kate?” I heard him say while the line went off and on again.

“Yes?”

“Let me text you!” he said and hang up.

After a few seconds, a text came through.

Sorry Kate, I went to watch the basketball game with Mike. Will be home soon.

I shook my head. Fred is usually so engrossed with games that at times he forgets what he was to do. It was already late and yet he was still out at this hour and tomorrow is a work day. I decided to eat. Wherever he is, he must have eaten already.

I took a shower then went to bed fifteen minutes to eleven. Fred had not yet come. I set the alarm and covered myself with the duvet. I must have slept for some time since the next thing I heard was a heavy blow to my leg. I woke up quickly and switched on the lights. It was Fred. He was trying to get to his side of the bed. I smelt his breath. He was high. I decided not to be angry and help him to sleep since I needed the sleep too. We would have to talk about it later on. I removed his dusty shoes. He was wearing a faded blue jeans with white t-shirt. He was heavy and made it look like a task I was doing by removing his clothing. By this time, he was already blacked-out so it was more cumbersome.

Finally, I returned back to my side and slipped into the sheets. I tried to close my eyes to sleep but I wouldn’t. Fred’s behavior had really annoyed me. I stretched out my hands and picked my phone from the bedside table. I looked at the clock. It was nearly four in the morning. I clicked. What kind of game was this that ended at this hour? How was he going to be at work in the morning? I returned the phone and tried again to sleep.

Take Care

From the clinic, I decided to pass by my mum’s house. Since I drove myself tot the clinic, the trip became really easy going to that part of town. My mother had recently moved to the city after my dad passed away last year. She felt she would be lonely back in the countryside after his demise. She was really excited about moving here but I still think she is lonely. Her recent escapades on drinking too much had me worried.

I found her in the living room watching Dr. Phil show. She was happy to see me. She gave me a tight hug and we sat down and watched the show together. Since I had come in when it had already started, I got to only watch twenty minutes of the remaining part of the show. Dr. Phil was discussing child negligence.

After it ended, I went to the kitchen and made myself a cup of coffee. I joined her on the couch and asked her how she was. She was okay; just a bit tired from the washing she had done that morning.

As she was concentrating on finding another interesting channel to watch, I found myself looking at her. She had developed fine wrinkles on the side of her mouth and on the forehead. Her skin was starting to sag. I had not noticed how aged she was. She was one glamorous woman but it seemed she could not defy the effects of age. I looked at her again. She was still beautiful. I moved towards her and kissed her on the cheek.

“What was that for?” she asked looking at me.

“Nothing, I just love you.”

“I love you too dear.”

She put on the Crime Network and we began watching it.

“Have you spoken to your brother?” she asked.

“Yes, but it was last week. He is good.”

“You should call him today evening.” She started. “His daughter is not feeling well.”

“Oh my, what’s the problem?”

“Molly got a bad flu after going on a school trip. She is under medication now but she has not gone to school for a few days.” She said.

“Ill make sure to call him as soon as I get back.”

“Say hi to him when you do.”

“I will.”

“How is Fred?”

“He is doing good mum. He is just busy with some errands at the moment.”

“Fred is good for you Catherine. He really cares about you.”

“I do care about him too mum.”

“Take care of that man. Its rare to find someone like him these days.”

I smiled.
