We Good

While watching some series that I had bought the other day, I indulged in the food I just bought. Man, it was really tasty. The chicken was grilled really good! I was really preoccupied with the television that I didn’t notice or hear my phone ring. I noticed this when I was preparing to go to sleep. I had five missed calls and two messages. All of them were from Fred.

The first text was basically asking me where I was while the second tried to explain why he went MIA on me during our meeting. Apparently he was called back in the office to fix up some computer systems that had gone down.  He spent most of the evening in the office and only left an hour ago.  Seriously, he couldn’t just call to say he was going to be late? I called him up.

He answered almost immediately when I called.

“Hello?” he called out.

“Hey, Sorry I didn’t hear the phone ring.”

“It’s okay. I’m really sorry for making you wait the whole evening. I hope you got the text explaining what happened.” he said.

“Yea, I got it but you couldn’t call to let me know you were called back to the office?”

“That’s the blunder I made. I thought the work was just going to take a few minutes, thirty minutes tops, but time seemed to move a little bit faster than I realized. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. You had dinner?” I asked.

“Yea, I grabbed some snacks on my way home.”

“I’m sorry about what happened earlier in the day on seeing Sam and I. He was just apologizing for the many mistakes he made back then. Nothing more.” I said.

“Sorry I flipped out. Guess I am not yet completely comfortable with him around.”

“So we good?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Thank you so much. Glad we ended that on a smooth note.”

“Me too. So we catch up tomorrow? Ill cook dinner at my place.” He said

“Definitely.”

Bouncing Dates

I got a text from Fred in the evening before I left work. He was asking me to meet him at his apartment at around seven. I knew that Sam was going to be the subject of the evening. As I stepped out of the office, I headed home and did some ironing for some work clothes for the rest of the week. As Seven O’clock drew near, I took a shower and changed into some casual clothes and headed to Fred’s apartment.

Since I had the keys to his apartment I let myself in. The living room area was empty so I went and knocked to his bedroom door.

“Fred?” I called out.

No answer.

“Fred? Where are you?” I called again but all I got was dead silence.

I went to him bedroom and pushed the door. It opened. The room was so dark that I had to switch on the lights. There was no one so I left and went back to the living room and waited for him while catching up with some news. Fifteen minutes passed but he didn’t show up.  Where the hell could he be? I tried to call him but the calls went unanswered.  After three more tries, I gave up. I tried Mike at least to check up with him if he was with Fred.

“You guys together?” I asked.

“No. We saw each other in the morning before we left for work. Is there a problem?” he asked sounding really concerned.

“Not really. We were to meet at your apartment at seven but he hasn’t shown up. His calls are not going through.”

“I’m sorry about that but am sure he will show up soon. I’ll try making calls and let you know.”

“Okay, thanks.”

I decided to leave for my apartment. Besides, I was already feeling hungry and I wasn’t sure on what time Fred was going to show up. I passed by the cafeteria near my house and bought some takeaway fries and a piece of chicken. Walking back home alone in the dark really gave me time to ask myself questions regarding Fred. How can he promise to hook up with me at his house and not avail himself? I didn’t want to assume anything bad had happened because the other time I waited for him at my place, he ended up in hospital after an accident. So I kept my hopes alive.

Caught

"You engaged?" he asked almost choking.

"Yes." I said smiling at him.

"I'm sorry. I didn't know." he replied.

"It's okay." I said while trying to comfort him.

"When did it happen?"

"In December."

"Congratulations are in order then." he said.

"Thank you so much."

"You are welcome."

"By the way, I have to run back to the office. I'm kind of late already."

"Yea." He said while looking at his wrist watch. "I also have to run somewhere."

I leaned in and tried to hug him but he was really stiff. So I leaned in further but on the corner of my eyes, I saw Fred looking in on us by the window. I froze! I tried to smile at him but he wasn't smiling back so I picked up my phone and walked out to meet him.

"Hey." I started.

"What the hell are you doing with him?" He asked really angry.

"I was having lunch and met up with Sam."

"Is he the pal you lied to me about?" he asked.

I didn't have an answer so I kept quiet.

We walked back to the office in silence. My heart was really pounding as to what he thought I was doing with Sam. He was definitely pissed off so I tried to give him time to cool off before I tried to explain myself to him. At the office, it gave us a good time to keep off each other although I knew we just had to talk about it on our way home.

A little bit late

It’s Friday..Yay!

As I woke up this morning, I couldn’t help but feel so happy and adventurous. I dressed up quickly and dashed to the office. There was some pending work from the day before so I concentrated on that which kept me busy for most part of the morning. At around noon, I was really tired so I checked out the newspaper but nothing caught my eyes.

I texted Sam and told him we can hook up at one that afternoon. I gave him the name of the restaurant that we were to meet and he replied a second later. His text contained only one letter. It simply said ‘k’. I really hate that especially when I have taken time to text a long message then all I get is just one letter!

Since I didn’t want Fred to know that I was meeting up with Sam, I sent a text to him also and told him that I was going to have lunch with a pal so he didn’t have to wait for me. He was okay with it so around one, I walked over to the restaurant where I was to meet Sam. The hotel was about two blocks from where the office was.

I checked out the place when I entered but Sam was nowhere to be seen. So I took a table near the window and ordered some French fries while waiting for him. Fifteen minutes later, I was done with my lunch and he had not showed up. I decided to call him up but it went straight to voice mail. So I ordered a soda which I drank slowly giving him more time. Then I heard some commotion. I looked up and saw it was Sam. He was talking to the waiter and it seems dramatic. I couldn’t hear what they were saying but figured they were shouting at each other.

“Hey.” He said when he came over.

“Hi.” I said. “What was that about?”

“It’s nothing. The waiter is just foolish. He nearly knocked me over when I was coming in.”

“You kinda deserve it.”  I said.

“What?”

“Yea, you kept me waiting for nearly half an hour and you didn’t even text to say you were arriving late.”

“I’m so sorry.” He said looking apologetic.

“So what did you want to say to me?”

“Can I just have a soda before we talk?”

“No, just say what you were to tell me. I have to go back to the office.”

“Kate…” he started.

“No Sam, I have no time.”

“Okay, I know this might seem weird but I need you in my life. I was such an ass when we were together and I deeply regret it.”

“Since when did you start apologizing?”

“Kate, I have changed.”

I gave out a loud laugh that spooked the guys next to us. “Stop joking.”

“I’m serious!” he replied.

I looked up to his face and realized he was serious.

“Sam, we can’t do this right now.”

“Why?”

“You are kind of late about that. I’m already engaged.”

Sam who?

Fred and Mike dropped me by my place and they headed to their crib moments later. I was really tired so I had a bath. I had missed taking time to pamper myself by taking a long bath so I really indulged in this. After about twenty five minutes, I had started dozing in the tub so I got up and went to the bedroom. I was just getting comfortable in the bed when the phone rang. I ignored it but the caller decided to call again. I picked it up without looking at the caller ID.

“Hello?” I asked.

“Kate, hallo.” A male voice said on the other end.

“Who am I talking to?” I asked curiously.

“Don’t you remember?” he said.

“No. Who are you?” I was getting really angry.

“It’s Sam.”

“Sam?” I asked. “Sam who?”

“Kate, be serious. It’s Sam, your ex-boyfriend.” He said.

“Oh, okay. How are you?”

“I’m okay. Just wondering, can we arrange we meet? I have something rather urgent to tell you.”

“Just say it. I’m sure it’s nothing that can’t be said through the phone.”

“Kate, please.”  He insisted.

“Sam, just say it before I hang up.”

“It’s really not a good idea if I say it on the phone, so can we hook up in town tomorrow?”

“Okay. Ill text you the time we can meet in the morning.”

I hanged up and roll over to the other side of the bed. What the hell could Sam have that was so important to discuss with me. I had successfully avoided him most of the times as he really complicates things between Fred and I. We are at such a good point with each other and could not wish anything to come in between it, especially Sam. Guess we had to wait until tomorrow.

I switched off the light and closed my eyes.

Mini-Reunion

Today was just not my day. I woke up late, had some filing issues at the office and as if to cap it all, I sent a wrong email to a client at a really important firm. I tried to make sure things came back to normal but it was all futile. Mrs. Wright called me up. It was one of those calls you don’t wish to get. Her anger and the shouting will be one of those things that I would remember for a long time. I had to focus!  As the day dragged on, I kept looking at the time wishing the day would just end. Fortunately for me, I had an afternoon meeting for two hours so by the time I was through, it was time to head home.

I met up with Mike at a restaurant near home as we were to catch up. It was a while since we last saw each other as it was before the festive season. Fred was also arriving today so we decided to all meet before we head home. Mike seemed so eager to talk about his festive season. He was really glad that his went so well.

As I was about to share my experiences, Fred showed up. He gave us all a hug and grabbed himself a seat and joined us.

“Hey dude, what’s up?” Fred asked Mike.

“I’m good bro. How was the trip?” Mike asked.

“It was okay except the usual traffic. Glad am here though.”

“Yea. Had missed you buddy.”

“Me too.” Fred said while giving him a back pat.

A waiter came by the table and he ordered some juice while Mike and I ordered a second round to our drinks.

“Kate, how was your day at the office?” Fred asked.

“It was the worst. You don’t even wanna know the details.” I replied.

“Okay, ill skip that.” He said and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
